The School Counselor Partnership

Due To Lack Of Funding

The citizens of Santa Barbara were in shock as a Jr. High kid killed his classmate on the main street in the middle of the day.  The nightmare did not end as it happened again and again, children killing children.  The editorials and the opinions in the local paper almost all point back to the same thing.  Where were the parents?

Often, kids get out of control, and parents don’t know what to do and just give up.  The distraction and destruction in a classroom with just one kid with a behavior problem costs.  It costs the rest of the students, because it minimizes the energy, time and focus of their teachers.  It destroys learning, relationships and productivity.

Family Fuel wants to stop the cycle of abusive and angry parenting that leads kids to rebel and turn to gangs to be accepted.  We want to give parents tools that give them help and hope.  We want to restore the family unit and prevent bullying, violence and killing. Targeting families at-risk that are already facing challenges when the children are in elementary school will help the parents regain order before the kids reach the more challenging teen years. Starting when the kids are younger increases the odds of restoring a family.

Most services offered to families are crisis oriented.  In this case, the family is already falling apart before they get the support and help they need.  It is not necessary that a family disintegrates.  It takes someone to step in and show that there is a better way.  Studies show that the cost of prevention is much less then the cost of crisis and intervention.

Family Fuel Inc.’s solution to behavior struggles in our schools is to partner with the Santa Barbara and Hope School Districts’ School-Based Counselors to create a support network for the families at-risk in their care.  We will build a partnership with each elementary school to provide parent education and support.

Parent Education to Families Referred by School-Based Counselors

Through this support network, we will offer referred families a life-changing seminar called Becoming a Love and Logic Parent.  Love and Logic Parenting is a non-violent, positive, practical and relationship based parenting approach that takes the stress out of parenting. Love and Logic teaches children responsibility and puts the FUN back into parenting!  Love and Logic brings ease to the household by setting limits with children in loving ways while giving them real world experience.  The result of successfully using the Love and Logic skills is that kids become more respectful, responsible and fun to be around, and parents have tools that replace anger, arguing, threats and stress.

Specialized Trainings for School-Based Counselors

Family Fuel, Inc. will offer free training to counselors in Parenting with Love and Logic to create common language for a successful parenting community throughout the districts.  Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) will be available for MFT’s and social workers for a cost per unit.

Additional On-Going Solutions:

Family Fuel, Inc. commits to families with on-going support.  There are several different resources that we will continuously offer to promote successful families.

On-Going Parent Support Groups

We will organize and facilitate on-going parent support groups with other parents trained in Love and Logic Parenting creating a positive social network and support system throughout the school districts.  This will be available to families after taking the 10-hour seminar.

Additional Focused Trainings on Specialized Topics (3 per family)

We will offer specialized trainings that focus on their specific individual family needs. Attending additional trainings will strengthen families.

Phone and / or Email Support

We will commit to be available to answer all parenting questions that are asked through phone or email in a timely manner.  Our answers will be thoughtful and in depth in helping reach solutions to parenting issues.

A True Story

She tugs at his little arm as she pulls him towards the classroom.  “You make me late every morning, what is wrong with you?  Why can’t you be like your sister?”  He reaches over and slaps at his younger sister. “STOP IT!” mom screams as she slaps his face.  “We don’t hit in this family.  You better be good today!  I better not have the teacher have to talk to me, again!  You better do good in school.  Hurry up, get in there!  And remember, I love you.” she says through clenched teeth.

The young boy walks in and interrupts the class yet again. The teacher sighs, regretting that she felt disappointment when he walked in.  She knew her day would be tough, once again, as she handles disruptions and aggression from this child.  He is confused about what the routine is because he comes in late every morning at different times.  The teacher stops to explain, and all the kids stare.  He looks down in embarrassment and suddenly remembers that his shirt is stapled closed.  “You don’t deserve buttons,” his mother told him that morning as she stapled his shirt closed.  His eyes are dull as he tells me this.  His face is sad.  His shoulders slump.  He finds his way to the carpet space to start another day of kindergarten.

It doesn’t have to be this way!
