The bully problem in schools and preschools is much worse than ever.

The physical bullying is still there, but added to the mix is emotional, social and cyber bullying.

Teasing, exclusion, gossip and negative electronic messaging require new strategies.

Old traditional ways of dealing with bullies, victims and bystanders just aren’t working anymore.

Advice like, “Tell him you don’t like it when he does that,” assumes the bully might care deep down.

Usually, it just makes the victim a bigger target and escalates the behavior.

We need to examine carefully the way we handle both the bully and the victim, so that both have learning experiences.

The outcome of bullying creates victims, creates compromised social and academic learning environments,

and creates a foundation for gang mentality and behavior.

Our city is devastated as kids younger and younger are doing violent crimes against each other.

We need to stop the bullying behavior before it reaches our elementary schools and empower our youngest

to not become victims of this cruel and increasing behavior.

It is so important to take an assertive role in stopping the tolerance of this behavior at all ages.

It is imperative that our community takes an active stance against bullying.

Family Fuel’s Anti-Bullying Campaign has three programs:

Bullying Starts in Preschool

This is a bully program for preschool parents, teachers and directors.

This presentation offers anti-bullying strategies for school and home.

Stop Bullying!

This is an educational interactive geared to 3rd – 6th graders.

Together, we identify bullying behaviors, give strategies to deal with bullies and how to avoid being a bystander.

Bullying Awareness and Prevention

This is for parents, teachers, educators, and administrators to increase their awareness of bullying,

learn how to diffuse it, and how to work successfully with each other.

A True Story From Preschool

Jesse walked onto the playground.  He was nervous and excited for his first day of school.  He watched as kids zoomed by on trikes, laughing and playing in the sand box.  Joshua ran up and grabbed his glasses off his face and threw them to the ground.  "This is not your school!" he shouted and ran away.  I was horrified to watch my son terrorized within seconds of getting to his new school.  "Welcome to preschool," I thought bitterly.

A True Story From Elementary School

Sam sat through a Family Fuel bullying presentation in his 5th grade class.  There was relief that the school was finally addressing bullying. There were so many ideas and strategies Sam could use.  The mean “Blackout” game had been going on for two years now mostly under the radar of the teacher.  He was so caught up in his own vacuum of being taunted and teased that he had no awareness that others in the class were being bullied as well.  Later that week, Sam shared about a bully on the swim team.  “Do you want me to talk to the coach?” I asked.  “No way, then I wouldn’t be able to use my new skills!”  He laughed with an enlightened look on his face.  “Boy, now that I know what to do and what to say, I can handle it,” he smiled confidently.

Testimonials

“As the principal of Washington Elementary School in Santa Barbara, I find Family Fuel to be an important resource.  Washington School has been fortunate enough to work with Steve and Judy Osterhage of Family Fuel on several occasions.  They provided a parent workshop on discipline that was extremely well received by the Washington School community.  Family Fuel was also able to provide a valuable workshop on bullying.  In both workshops, the level of information, the professionalism, and the approach were all grade appropriate and effective.  As an administrator it can be a bit nerve wracking to bring in people from the outside to consult on sensitive issues. Family Fuel has proven itself to be a trusted resource in our school community.”

Demian Barnett, Principal

Washington School

“Steve and Judy have organized a wonderful bullying presentation with Family Fuel.  Their insightful and well-targeted presentation to our fifth grade class had a profound affect on the students and their behavior towards each other.  The Family Fuel presentation gave valuable life-long tools on how to interact with each other.  Tools our students will carry with them for the rest of their lives.  They were able to present these tools in an environment of acceptance for all, while being able to pin point exactly the behaviors students needed to be aware of that were affecting each other.  They have the right energy to get the point across in an engaging and thoughtful manner.  We look forward to the positive influence they will continue to have with our youth and adults alike.”

Bridget Berg, Fifth Grade GATE Teacher

Washington Elementary

“I endorse and support Judy and Steve's presentation on bullying.  It is engaging for students while effectively bringing their attention to the true nature of bullying.  They provide rich material to educate and inform students, educators and parents alike.  I would like to see all students learning this!”
